P.E and Games

Intent

Lovington Primary School recognises and values the importance of Physical Education (PE) and all physical exercise. PE is an important part of our curriculum. It is inclusive and engages all pupils in a supportive environment. It is our intention to build a curriculum that enables children to develop knowledge, skills and vocabulary in a broad range of sporting activities, as well as developing values and transferrable life skills such as fairness and respect. In our school, we aim to deliver high-quality outdoor learning and play opportunities to ensure children attain optimum physical and emotional development and good health. Through this, we want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.

Implementation

Children at Lovington Primary School participate in at least two hours of Physical Education (including outdoor learning) each week. In EYFS and KS1, children take part in teacher-led lessons that focus on gross motor skills, fine motor skills and fundamental movements. In KS2 we build on these fundamental skills and provide challenging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; Invasion Games, Strike and Field Games, Gymnastics, Dance and Swimming.

We ensure that our PE curriculum is inclusive for all children, regardless of their sporting ability. We provide learning opportunities for all children, including those with SEND. The long-term PE Curriculum Overview sets out the PE Units which are taught each half-term throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met. This is done through teachers having solid PE knowledge and external experts who provide extra sporting sessions.

In addition to PE lessons, children are also encouraged to participate in a varied range of extracurricular activities. After school sports clubs are available for children to attend. We also encourage the use of movement breaks throughout the school day.

At Lovington, we promote both participation and competition through PE and sport. We ensure all children experience competition at some level, individually or in a team within lessons. Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area as well as Sports Day and our swimming gala. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental wellbeing. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children.

Impact

Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Lovington Primary School; not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines that PE promotes. Through strong links with PHSE, we promote the overall wellbeing and health of each child through teaching about self-discipline and that to be successful you need to take ownership and responsibility for your own health and fitness. Children at Lovington Primary make excellent progress in PE. We measure this impact by:

  • Regular learning walks
  • Pupil questionnaires
  • PE Premium spend analysis
  • Analysis of participation at after-school clubs and competitions

Lovington Primary School children love their sport at break times and lunch times too!
