Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) at Lovington Primary School enables our children to develop the knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes that they need to lead confident, healthy and independent lives.
We aim for children to become informed, active and responsible members of the community, home and society. Our PSHE curriculum supports children to make decisions and to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. It will give children essential skills for building positive, enjoyable and respectful relationships and ensures they have the knowledge to be able to stay safe both on and offline; with children knowing where to go for help if they need it. Our curriculum enables children to explore their own and others’ attitudes and values and promotes building self-esteem, confidence and wellbeing. We aim for children to feel confident and informed as a British citizen, both now and in the future.
PSHE is part of our broad and balanced curriculum, and is taught across each year group. Our curriculum has been designed through consultation with staff, children, governors and parents and fully meets the requirements set out in the statutory guidance for Relationships, Sex and Health Education. British values are entwined and promoted throughout the whole curriculum.
PSHE is taught on a weekly basis throughout the year, and each year group will follow the SCARF plan.
Areas of study the children cover include:
Each area is revisited every year, taking on more challenging content and discussions as the children progress through KS1 and into KS2.
PSHE and personal development is not only delivered through discrete weekly lessons, but is also promoted across the curriculum and in all aspects of school life, developing our core principals of independence, communication, confidence and motivation. For example, we ensure that we focus on key national campaigns such Children’s Mental Health week, road safety alongside other national events with our pupils continually promoting the work that we do within PSHE. It also links closely with our Religious Education curriculum.
All teaching is inclusive of all pupils and families and our lessons are delivered in a balanced, non-judgmental way.
All teachers set ground rules with their class to ensure that everyone feels safe to participate and understands boundaries around behaviour and questions. Pupils’ questions will always be answered in a factual, age-appropriate way.

The impact of our PSHE provision will be measured through:
The final result of the work around our PSHE curriculum will be that our pupils leave Lovington Primary School with a confident image of themselves as valued people who are better equipped to manage situations that arise in their lives, both socially and personally.
The inclusion of safeguarding and internet safety provides our children with a safe environment, in which they learn how to deal with the constant pressures of social media that confront them today. They will move forward into the world as happy, confident, motivated and resilient young people.
